"Magic Place" is a cinematic pop piece that lyrically explores how folklore is transmitted. Adults tell fantastical stories to children even when they no longer feel the joy and fear (flip sides of the same coin) that those myths can generate. As such, adults are often in the position of simultaneously disbelieving and believing the stories we hear and tell. Through our stories, we become particular kinds of people, and we have to keep telling those stories even as our own relationship to them changes. Storytelling, as mythmaking, creates timeless spaces where everything past and present is layered together. Musically and lyrically, this song evokes both the “magic” of childhood and the “nostalgia” adults often feel for it.
